What is JavaScript?

Brendan Eich built the first working prototype in about ten days in May 1995. It reached the public that September in a Netscape Navigator 2.0 beta, got the name "JavaScript" that December, and shipped for real in Navigator 2.0 in March 1996 — and it kept growing for years after. It has since become one of the most popular programming languages in the world.
